Mike Pipers career began in the 1960s and he is now one of Australias leading documentary filmmakers. A recent survey by the Australian Film Commission placed his company, Piper Films, in the top 10% of Australian documentary production companies.
His companys latest production, the 4 x 1/2 hour series, OPAL FEVER, was commissioned by ABC-TV for its high rating prime-time Reality Bites strand and premiered on ABC Australia in February 2005.
The one-hour version of OPAL FEVER also won the National Geographic Channels International Best People and Places Film at the inaugural WildSouth Film Festival in New Zealand.
In February 2002 Mike was made Honorary Associate of the Royal Zoological Society of South Australia in recognition of his role in the production of quality natural history television programming and exceptional support for the objectives of the society. Mike was Chairman of the 6th Australian International Documentary Conference, held in Adelaide in November 1999, and was a founding Board Member of AIDC Ltd the national entity responsible for the administration of the AIDC from 2000 until 2003, and is currently South Australian Chapter Head of Screen Producers Association of Australia.
